The 2022 LEC regular summer split has come to an end with G2 taking the top spot in the standings. The league leaders also became the first team to qualify for the League of Legends World Championship after a decisive win against Misifts on saturday. After 15 games played by each team — and a very competitive split, the race for LEC playoffs came down to the last week with only MAD Lions locked in before Week 8.

G2 kicked off the super week with a win against MAD and secured their playoffs spot. After this, Rogue and Misfits also locked their places in the playoffs, leaving just two spots open for Vitality, Fnatic and Excel.  While the three teams had equal chances to clinch the last two slots, Fnatic took matters into their own hands with a last minute win against Misfits.

Vitality and Excel: A tie-breaker for the last spot

Fnatic’s win against Misfits left only one spot in the LEC playoffs with Vitality and Excel forced to battle for it. Vitality had knocked Excel out of the first round of the spring playoffs and were looking to end their split once more. However, Excel were determined to carry out their revenge in the last dance for playoffs.

Excel came into the tie breaker with a decision to turn back the clock with the Tresh support for Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle. Erlend “nukeduck” Våtevik also opted for the Twisted Fate which had not been popular in the regular spring split. These decisions paid off as Excel got off a good start with control in the bot and mid lane.

The team pushed their advantages into the mid game and picked up more Dragons to put them on Dragon Soul. Excel ended the game after sneaking the baron in the 29th minute and finding a perfect team fight in the river to wipe out four Vitality players. The win marked the end of the season for the Vitality super team and a sucessful revenge for Excel.

Seeding for LEC Playoffs

After the conclusion of the Vitality and Excel tie-breaker, Fnatic and Misfits also played a tie-breaker for fourth place. Since Misfits and Fnatic both had 80 championship  points after Fnatic’s win against them, the teams faced each other again for the final game of the regular summer split.

Following Misfits win against Fnatic in the rematch, the seeding for the 2022 LEC summer playoffs is as follows:

  • G2 Esports — 1st
  • Rogue — 2nd
  • MAD Lions — 3rd
  • Misfits — 4th
  • Fnatic — 5th
  • Excel — 6th

The last two teams will begin the LEC summer playoffs in the lower bracket and a single elimination best-of-five series. Meanwhile the top four teams will begin in the winners bracker and are guaranteed double-elimination best -of-five series if they lose. After finishing in first place, G2 decided to pick  Misfits as their opponent the first round of the winners bracket.

The LEC summer playoffs will likely begin on August 26 with no official date confirmed yet.
