The 2019 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational begins with its play-in stage on May 1. The eight minor representatives are split into groups A and B. The teams are put into the two different groups based on their region’s performance over the last two years. These winners will then go on to compete against Team Liquid of the LCS and Flash Wolves of the LMS.

Group A features TCL’s 1907 Fenerbahçe, VCS’ Phong Vũ Buffalo, LLA’s Isurus Gaming, and OPL’s Bombers. Group B consists of LST’s MEGA, LCL’s Vega Squadron, LJL’s DetonatioN FocusMe, and CBLOL’s INTZ e-Sports.

Competition guidelines

The winner of Group A will advance to the next round and duke it out against Team Liquid. The victor of Group B will advance to the next round and match up against Flash Wolves. The losers of each play-in knockout match will then play against each other to qualify for the next round. In total, three teams will come out of the play-in stage and advance to the group stage.

In the group stage, these three teams will face LEC Champions G2 Esports, LPL Champions Invictus Gaming, and LCK Champions SK Telecom T1. The six teams will play each other in a double round robin format. A double round robin competition consists of each team playing each other team twice. Four teams from this competition will then advance to the playoffs stage.

About Mid-Season Invitational 2019

The play-in stage starts May 1 and runs until May 7 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The main group stage between the six teams occurs May 10 – 14. Finally, four teams will emerge and advance to the playoffs in Taipei on May 17 – 19.

During the 2018 MSI event, China’s Royal Never Give Up took first, Korea’s Kingzone DragonX took second, and a tie between UK’s Fnatic and Taiwan’s Flash Wolves took third place. North America’s Team Liquid and Vietnam’s EVOS Esports tied for fifth and sixth.
