It felt like just yesterday that we were writing about the Worlds Play-in Stage. However, the confetti is still falling at Worlds 2018 Finals, and history has been made. A new king of the world would crown themselves today, with China versus Europe. The dark horse of the East, Invictus Gaming against the West’s only hope, Fnatic. Who will rise above, and lift the Summoner’s Cup over their head? Let’s find out.

Fnatic carries the hopes of not only Europe but the entire Western League of Legends scene. The Europeans were looking incredible on their way to the Finals, starting from the group stage. They would top their group with a 5-1 record. Fnatic They would even take down Invictus Gaming in their tiebreaker. In the playoffs, Fnatic would dominate Edward Gaming and Cloud9, only losing one game in those two series. They were arguably the favorites of this matchup, but would they keep their play consistent?

On the other hand, Invictus Gaming were the dark horse of China heading into Worlds. Not many people had them going to the Finals, especially with facing KT Rolster in the first round. However, they would defy all expectations, and upset the favorites of the tournament. They would go on to roll over G2 Esports in the semifinals, and end up here, ready to solidify China’s spot on the throne. Could Invictus Gaming’s stars take down Fnatic?

Invictus Gaming controls Fnatic with ease

In game one of Worlds, Invictus Gaming would exercise their power on the Rift. It was clear that the Chinese third seed was much more prepared than the Europeans. Additionally, Rasmus “Caps” Winther would overexert himself too many times, trying too many big plays. Meanwhile, Invictus Gaming’s jungler Gao “Ning” Zhen-Ning would affect all the lanes with his Camille, putting his lanes ahead. With his lead, Song “Rookie” Eui-jin would end up taking over the game. Fnatic would end up losing in 27 minutes, a foreshadowing of the future.

Game two would bring more of the same, with Ning again affecting all of his side lanes. He would be the X-factor that would push Invictus Gaming almost every match. He would play Gragas in game two, and end up with a 5/0/11 scoreline. Meanwhile, Mads “Broxah” Brock-Pedersen could not find the same success. His counterganking style of play just could not find its mark against Invictus Gaming. Additionally, Invictus Gaming’s lane would play exceptionally, with Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok and Yu “JackeyLove” Wen-Bo with their own pop-off games.

Game three wouldn’t take too long either, with Broxah picking Jax in the jungle. It wouldn’t find much success, while JackeyLove would find an early lead and snowball on Kai’sa. He would end up with thirteen kills on the match. Fnatic would only take two turrets in this quick 26-minute game, even after bringing in Paul “sOAZ” Boyer for Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau. Overall, this was one of the fastest Finals in Worlds history. It wasn’t even close, but Invictus Gaming has proven themselves as the best team in the World.

Final Thoughts

Many fans were disappointed with how things played out, not only for the Finals but for the entire playoffs. Besides the quarterfinals, the rest of the matchups were pretty lopsided. Today, Fnatic simply could not match the individual firepower that Invictus Gaming brought to the table. Rookie, TheShy, and JackeyLove all would have their shining moment this Finals. Fnatic couldn’t even use their biggest strength, team fighting and macro, to their advantage. Simply put, they were outclassed by Invictus Gaming this day.

Speaking of which, Invictus Gaming is ushering in a new age of dominance in the League of Legends world. No longer is Korea sitting on the throne of the world. China has won all the major international tournaments in 2018, from MSI to Rift Rivals, and now Worlds. They are truly the strongest region, although the source of their power came from an unlikely source. Rookie has proven that he is the best mid laner in the world, for now. JackeyLove looks like he could become the best ADC in the world in a couple years time. Even TheShy was playing well, looking like a star top laner.

For Fnatic, they were simply outplayed today, and none of the X-factors that brought them here would show up. Broxah did not play too well today, Caps was outclassed by Rookie, and Bwipo could not find any leads. However, this was still a historic run for the last Western team. Yes, the ending was not the one they wanted, but they can leave Worlds with their heads held high. Caps will come back even stronger, wanting to prove himself and get back to Worlds again. I doubt this is the last time that we will see Fnatic at Worlds.
