There has never been a Call of Duty game without some form of killstreaks since the original Modern Warfare, and that isn’t changing in Modern Warfare 3 this year. Killstreaks are back and you can hop into any multiplayer match to earn them by securing kills. However, MW3 also employs a system where you can earn scorestreaks in addition to killstreaks, making objective play much more attractive.

This is a system that was first introduced with the launch of Modern Warfare 2 in 2022. While that game’s multiplayer wasn’t praised for much, this is a feature that was widely applauded by the community. Luckily for the player base, developer Sledgehammer Games has kept the same system in place in MW3, meaning you can easily swap back and forth between killstreaks and scorestreaks in multiplayer.

In the guide, I’ll show you exactly how to do just that.

Swapping between killstreaks and scorestreaks in MW3

This is one of, if not the easiest feature to use in multiplayer, but only if you know where to look for it. I’ll explain how to find the feature and use it in MW3 in the steps below:

  • Go to your Weapons tab in the lobby screen of MW3 multiplayer
  • Scroll over to the “Killstreaks” tab, which is to the right of the Loadouts tab
  • Look at the bottom left corner of the screen and you will see a toggle that says “Scorestreaks”
  • To switch to scorestreaks, move your cursor over the toggle and press the interact button
  • This will change the option to whatever you didn’t have selected previously.
  • Once you’ve made the change, you will see that all of the streaks in the menu now show the amount of kills/score you need to earn them, depending on which type of streak you switched to

And it’s as simple as that. After making the change, you can head into a multiplayer match of MW3 and you will earn your streaks in whatever way you set. I recommend swapping between killstreaks and scorestreaks depending on what game mode you’re playing. If you’re playing anything with an objective, like Domination, Search and Destroy, Kill Confirmed, etc., then scorestreaks are the best way to go. Playing the objective actually has meaning now when it comes to earning your streaks.

However, if you’re playing something like Team Deathmatch or Free-For-All, killstreaks are usually the better method, as there’s no objective other than securing kills.
