If you have reached the point in Hogwarts Legacy where you have access to both the Room of Requirement and the Vivarium, then you’re likely asking how you can bring in more beasts. When you first enter the Vivarium, you will be able to add 12 total beasts to the wide-open field that you’re currently in. While this is great for adding some Mooncalves and Puffskein that you just caught, you will eventually want to add more beasts without giving up the ones you’ve already grown to care for. Essentially, you want to increase your species limit in Hogwarts Legacy. The game doesn’t do a terrific job of explaining how to do this, unfortunately, so you might be stuck wandering the castle for hours trying to get more beasts under your control.

For those trying to figure out how to do this, I have the answer for you in the guide below.

Right off the bat, you can’t actually increase the beast species limit in the starting Vivarium you get in Hogwarts Legacy. The default Vivarium is capped at 12 beasts, and you can only add four total species to the Vivarium’s inventory.

Luckily, as you continue to progress through Hogwarts Legacy, you will unlock additional Vivariums. Like with the default one, you are capped at 12 beasts and four species in each of these Vivariums. However, this is on top of any previous Vivarium you have unlocked. In total, you can unlock four different Vivariums, meaning you can have a maximum of 48 beasts at a time (12 x 4).

In order to unlock every Vivarium, you need to complete the following quests:

  • Default Vivarium: The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom quest
  • Coastal Vivarium: The Plight of the House-Elf quest
  • Swamp Vivarium: Foal of the Dead quest
  • Meadow Vivarium:  Phoenix Rising quest

Once you have completed all of those quests, you will be able to change the Vivarium you enter when you go through the door in the Room of Requirement. In each Vivarium, you can add different beasts and species, giving you the true feeling of owning a zoo. You can also breed creatures, meaning you are always able to have a fully-stocked Vivarium no matter which one you’re going into. Of course, the baby creatures still count against your 12 total for each Vivarium, so you need to make sure you’re keeping track.
