Hogwarts Legacy has finally been released and it’s time for players to begin their very own adventure at the famed school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In the new open world RPG, players will take on the role of a fifth-year transfer student who will partake in classes and be sorted into their House. However, in addition to the mundane life of school, a deeper plot will also develop — and players will be put right into the center of it.

If you’re wondering just how far your character can go when it comes to this plot and Hogwarts Legacy as a whole, look no further.

Harry Potter fans undoubtedly know about the Unforgivable Curses, of which there are three. The killing curse is known as Avada Kedavra, and it’s a spell that has been at the center of debates for months in the Hogwarts Legacy community. It was confirmed that Avada Kedavra is a learnable spell in the game, and fans want to know how they can use the spell and if it affects their playthrough. If you want to get through the trickier parts of the end game in Hogwarts Legacy, you just might have to pull out the killing curse.

The question is, when exactly do you get it in Hogwarts Legacy?

Unfortunately for those hoping to spend the early parts of Hogwarts Legacy whipping killing spells around willy-nilly, you don’t get to unlock Avada Kedavra until the end of the game. You first need to be level 28 before you’re able to learn the spell. You also need to complete a series of quests in Sebastian’s quest line. The one quest you need to complete is called “In the Shadow of the Relic,” and it’s not available until players reach level 28.

By this time, you will likely be nearing completion of the main Hogwarts Legacy story, as the final quest requires a level lower than 28. The Shadow of the Relic quest involves players battling a key character in Hogwarts Legacy. Once they’re defeated, players will have the option to learn the Avada Kedavra curse.

Luckily for those with a loose moral compass, there are no repercussions for using Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy. There is no morality system in the game, so you can go around killing enemies left and right without a care in the world. Avada Kedavra kills instantly, though, so you might want to be careful with the spell before firing it off. It’s currently unclear if the spell instantly kills bosses, however, as most bosses are cleared out by the time players learn Avada Kedavra.
