If you ever want to do any kind of legendary weapon upgrading in Diablo 4, there are certain crafting materials that you will need plenty of. The most basic materials are iron and silver, which you can find by smashing rocks found all throughout the map. However, as you progress in the levels of an upgrade, you will need even more advanced materials. One of them is Baleful Fragments, which is one of the rarest materials in all of Diablo 4.

Baleful Fragments are only used in the last stage of a legendary weapon upgrade, which is upgrade number four. Prior to that, all you will need are Veiled Crystals in addition to iron and silver. For the fourth upgrade, you still need those three materials, but it’s also required to have a set number of Baleful Fragments.

If you need help finding Baleful Fragments, I have put together a guide that explains exactly how to acquire them in Diablo 4.

Fortunately, the method of acquiring Baleful Fragments is extremely straightforward in Diablo 4. Unfortunately, it will require you to salvage legendary weapons. That’s right, the only way to get Baleful Fragments is to salvage legendary weapons. The irony is that those Baleful Fragments are then used to upgrade legendary weapons.

Of course, there are no real concrete ways of obtaining legendary weapons in Diablo 4. You will have to rely on luck to find them by completing dungeons, defeating bosses, and running through Strongholds, for the most part. Then, you have to decide whether or not to use the legendary weapon you found. If you don’t want to use it, then I recommend salvaging it over keeping or selling it.

Either way, once you find a legendary weapon you don’t want, bring it to the Blacksmith and salvage it. This should result in your obtaining a Baleful Fragment that you can then use to upgrade a legendary weapon to level four, making it the strongest it can be.
