One of the main issues that melee characters in Elden Ring face is trying to use a shield and weapon together. While this isn’t a dilemma for the most part, it can turn into a large one if you want to use an Ash of War on your melee weapon.
When it comes to the Ashes of War, Elden Ring will require you to use your shield’s Ash of War over your melee weapon’s ash. Luckily, there is one way around this (aside from simply not using a shield). It involves you acquiring an Ash of War called “No Skill.”
The No Skill Ash of War does exactly what you assume it would; it makes it so the armament you equip it on has no usable Ash of War. This is perfect to equip on a shield so you can use the shield in your left hand and a melee weapon in your right hand while getting to use your melee weapon’s Ash of War.

Finding the No Skill Ash of War in Elden Ring
Fortunately for any early playthroughs, the No Skill Ash of War can be acquired within the first hour of the game. You’ll need to go into Stormhill, the northern part of Limgrave, and head to the bridge that hangs over the region. This bridge connects Stormveil Castle to the Divine Tower of Limgrave.
Once you’re in this vicinity, you’re looking for the Warmaster’s Shack Site of Grace. This is just south of the bridge, as you can see in the screenshot below.
At the shack, you will find an NPC who sells Ashes of War. Only come during the daytime, however, as the nighttime spawns a boss that drops a Bell Bearing. After talking to the Warmaster, you can purchase items from his shop, including the No Skill Ash of War. You can also purchase a Lost Ash of War, which lets you duplicate an Ash of War if you need two of the No Skill Ashes.
Once you have the Ash of War, go to a Site of Grace and equip it onto whatever shield you’re using. Now you can have a shield out and still use your melee weapon’s Ash of War in combat.
