Pokémon GO’s March content update titled Rising Heroes brings new raids, spotlight hours and rewards to the game. The Pokémon GO Battle League will also feature some key new additions in the form of new cups and new moves for a select few Pokémon.

One of these Pokémon is Whimsicott, a Generation V staple Grass-type Pokémon. Whimsicott exists on the fringe of metagame relevance in the GO Battle League as a Grass/Fairy-type attacker with a unique blend of offense. Previously known for being one of the few Charm users in the metagame, Whimiscott now has access to the Fast Move Fairy Wind which may be a significant upgrade for it.

Here is how you can catch, battle with and defeat opposing Whimsicott in Pokémon GO.

How to Catch Whimsicott

Unfortunately, Rising Heroes does not come with any special spotlight hours, egg hatches or other unique opportunities to capture Whimsicott or its pre-evolution, Cottonee. There have been events in the past, such as the Lush Jungle event back in 2022, that have featured Cottonee and Whimsicott, so there’s a chance this Pokemon could be featured sometime down the line.

Not to mention, the Pokémon website gave special attention to Whimsicott’s brand new move in addition to Pokémon like Noivern that has had its own Community Day this year. Perhaps there’s one in the cards for Cottonee and Whimsicott to promote their new battling capabilities.

For now though, it comes down to encountering this Pokémon the old fashioned way. Best time to go hunting for these Pokémon are on Cloudy days (boost spawn rate of Fairy-type Pokémon) or on Clear/Sunny days (boost the spawn rate of Grass-type Pokémon).

Best moveset for Whimsicott

Fast Move: Fairy Wind

Whimsicott just got this new move in its arsenal, and now’s the best time to put it to use. Fairy Wind is a fantastic Fast Move for just how much energy its able to charge. This comes in handy when needing to throw out powerful Moonblasts and keep up shield pressure. Charm and Razor Leaf are still fine options, but due to Charm’s nerf, Whimsicott’s kit looks to be moving on.

Charged Moves: Grass Knot, Moonblast

Moonblast is an incredibly powerful Charged Move that has the chance to lower the Attack of the target Pokémon. Grass Knot on the other hand is fine for coverage, as it really is the only other same-type-boosted move that Whimsicott has access to.

Best Whimsicott counters

Grass/Fairy offensively and defensively is solid in the current Pokémon GO Great League metagame, where Whimsicott thrives the best in. This type combination gives it wins over some of the game’s best like Altaria, Swampert and Medicham.

Unfortunately, as a Grass-type, Whimsicott loathes the abundance of Wing Attack Pokémon like Pelipper and doesn’t quite have the fire power to muscle through Steel-types like Registeel and Galarian Stunfisk. Grass-types don’t often exist near the top of the GO Battle League’s viability rankings, making Whimsicott a fine choice but one that requires a certain level of finesse to use properly.
