Once you’ve navigated through Pokémon Sword and Shield‘s Glimwood Tangle, you will reach Ballonlea. This city has a real fantasy forest feel to it, and as such, it is the home to the Fairy-type Gym. Here’s what you need to know to beat the Ballonlea Gym.

The best Pokémon for Ballonlea

Fairy-type Pokémon are only weak to Poison and Steel-type moves. Poison isn’t the greatest against the Gym Leader either – it isn’t super-effective against Galarian Weezing, and it won’t affect Mawile at all. Any Steel-types, on the other hand, will dominate this gym.

Copperajah is the absolute best Pokémon to have for the Ballonlea Gym. It’s a Steel-type with a great Attack stat and good bulk that can learn Ground-type moves to help it against Mawile. Cufant, who evolves into it, appears in the Bridge Field zone of the Wild Area. It spawns in the Overworld in Normal, Intense Sun, Overcast, and Snowstorm weather. It will evolve at level 34.

Other solid options include Bronzong, Ferrothorn, Aegislash, Mawile, Roserade, and Toxtricity. These Pokémon are all Steel or Poison-type and can learn attacks of the same type that will help you beat the gym.

Beating the Gym

The Ballonlea Gym Mission involves taking quizzes and battling trainers. You will go up against three trainers who will all ask you a question. If you answer their question correctly, your Pokémon will get a stat boost. If you answer it wrong, your Pokémon’s stats will drop.

The first question has no wrong answer, the correct answer to the second question is “Annette”, and the correct answer to the third question is “Omelets”. When you beat these three trainers, you will be tasked with fighting the Gym Leader, Opal.

Opal

Opal has a level 36 Galarian Weezing, Mawile, and Togekiss, as well as a level 38 Alcremie that she will Gigantamax. During the battle, she will ask you questions. Just like in the Gym Mission, answering them correctly will up your Pokémon’s stats and visa versa.

The answer to the first question is “The Wizard”, the answer to the second is “Purple”, and the answer to the final question about her age is “16 years old”. If you answer the final question with the obvious answer, “88 years old”, she will get mad.

Answering all the questions correctly makes the Ballonlea Gym quite easy. Once you’ve beaten it, it will be on to Circhester City to face either Gordie or Melony, depending on whether you have Pokémon Sword or Shield. Be sure to stay tuned for more Pokémon news and guides!
