Halo: The Master Chief Collection didn’t have a great start upon initial release. Originally launched in late 2014, the collection was riddled with bugs and connection issues. After years of due game dev diligence, including developer 343 Industries reworking Halo‘s online infrastructure last year, the collection is being released on PC. Does it have a place in esports? Or is the scene too crowded?

Halo: The Master Chief Collection to hit the final frontier

This is huge news for the long-standing Microsoft hit. The last Halo title to become available for PC was Halo 2. This was back in 2007. Every title since has released exclusively to Xbox. This news broke on March 12 during Xbox Inside’s live stream. The Master Chief Collection will be available on both the Windows Store and Steam. 343 Industries has stated that the games won’t be rolling out altogether, but rather gradually. They’ll be starting with the series prequel, Halo: Reach.

PC fans can finally enjoy the full Halo experience, with Halo: Reach and Halo 3 being available for the first time in history.

Microsoft interested in discussing esports

With this news, the conversation has moved, naturally, to esports. Halo has a long history of competitive gaming to its name. While interest has dwindled in recent years – both due to the lack of crossplay and the surge in battle royale genre popularity – this could represent a return to form.

On March 12, Microsoft’s lead esports producer, Tahir Hasandjekic, divulged some information in response to an inquiry. When asked by a Twitter user regarding crossplay and Halo esports, Hasandjekic gave assurance that there will be more talk about esports at SXSW. The team will be speaking at the Halo Championship Series, specifically, at the venue.

While clarifying that fans shouldn’t expect “major PC Halo esports announcements” at this event, he has an interest in opening up lines of communication regarding it.

With possible cross-play and Microsoft expressing an interest in the industry, the future may see Halo dominating the Esports scene.

Will Halo ‘reach’ esports fame?

At the time of this writing, there’s still much to know regarding the direction Microsoft and 343 will take with Halo: The Master Chief Collection and esports. The first-person shooter scene, on one hand, is fairly saturated as it is. That being said, Halo is a nearly 20-year-old franchise. It has demonstrated a massive fanbase and continued interest in the direction of the series. The Master Chief Collection being fully reworked and available on PC opens up an entirely new avenue for the series.

The developers have stated that the reason for staggering the release of their games is to ensure the best production possible. The older Halo titles are getting a serious graphical overhaul, and 343 is fully open to community input. Add in a zippy new network configuration, and the potential is there. The ball’s in Microsoft’s court, as long-time fans of the series wait with bated breath.

At this point, there’s no official release date for the collection. Does Halo: The Master Chief Collection have a place in esports? Will you play it on PC? Let us know for sure!
