The 0-18 dream is finally dead as the Golden Guardians were able to find their first win of the LCS Spring Split today. They would defeat OpTic Gaming in a 32-minute game, with the help of Juan “Contractz” Arturo Garcia and Henrik “Froggen” Hansen.

OpTic Gaming and Golden Guardians both have been looking pretty mediocre in the last couple of weeks. For example, OpTic has looked like a middling team at best, and a bottom three team at worst. Their victories against Clutch Gaming and CLG were not as convincing as many would have wanted, while their losses were pretty uninspiring. They have also been experimenting with combinations between their main roster and their Academy team, to varied success.

Meanwhile, the Golden Guardians have looked like the worst team in the LCS up to this point in the season. It is a disheartening way to start the season given they finished each of last year’s splits in last. Many people actually expected a lot more from this roster, especially with the addition of multiple veterans like Kevin “Hauntzer” Yarnell and Kim “Olleh” Joo-sung. Unfortunately, their departure from their various teams has only brought more harm than good for their careers.

Golden Guardians get over the hump

It has finally happened. Golden Guardians have finally picked up their first win. It wasn’t a clean win or a strong win, but it is a win nonetheless.  It would be good performances from Contractz and Froggen that would seal the deal for their side. Froggen’s Karthus would farm incredibly efficiently, and later in the game would become a menace to deal with. Unfortunately, this was not a playstyle that would win against any other decent team. Having to farm for so long would usually be punished but because of some glaring mistakes by OpTic, they were not taken advantage of.

Speaking of OpTic Gaming, they would put in their main roster for this game and royally fail. Their starting roster feels incredibly weak, especially with Niship “Dhokla” Doshi and Noh “Arrow” Dong-hyeon. Both players did not perform well at all and would be a big reason for their loss. OpTic Gaming also seems very disorganized at times and do not have much chemistry together. In fact, their Academy roster seemed to do much better. As a result, I expect them to be starting next week due to their recent successes. These results should also force OpTic Gaming to make some decisions in terms of the starting roster moving forward.

Looking Forward

Ultimately, North America is still a very confusing region to judge four weeks into the Spring Split. Most teams still haven’t really proven themselves as contenders except for Team Liquid. As a result, this doesn’t put too much confidence in the hearts of NA fans. For example, if we look at Europe or Korea, there is a clear hierarchy at play. You have the top teams, contenders, the middle of the pack, and the bad. However, in North America, everyone seems to be a middle-of-the-pack team. The region needs to find some kind of consistency before the next international event.
