Thanks to Fortnite update v5.10, Battle Royale players can once again blast each other from afar with Guided Missiles. Originally removed in April following fan backlash after content update v3.5, the Guided Missile is now revised to better fit the game’s balance. In a post on their blog, Epic Games states the following:

The Guided Missile is back from the Vault and dropping into Battle Royale this update! In its time away, the Guided Missile has been tweaked and tuned down as it was too strong upon its initial release.

Not only does the weapon have a shorter flight duration, but reload time is increased and damage output is decreased. In fact, the adjustment is so great that the weapon can no longer eliminate fully-healed players in a single shot. For example, the two variants, Epic and Legendary, only deal 74/77 damage respectively. Prior to the weapon’s removal, they dealt 105/110 damage to players. Furthermore, the weapon has a 60% decrease to its structural damage since its last iteration.

The complete patch notes for the Guided Missile are as follows:

  • Available in Epic and Legendary variants.
  • Fuse duration reduced from 18 to 15 seconds.
  • Movement Speed decreased from 1100 to 1000.
  • Reload time increased to 2.4/2.2.
  • Reduced player damage from 105/110 down to 74/77 damage.
  • Reduced structure damage down from 1100 to 400.
  • Explosions now damage structures with no regard for Line of Sight.
  • Guided Missile can also be controlled via keyboard using the default movement inputs.

Whether or not these changes are enough for the Guided Missile to remain part of Fortnite‘s permanent arsenal remains to be seen. For the time being, the return of this weapon should provide another level of zany hijinks for the new and existing limited time modes.

The Fly Explosives LTM focuses on the jetpack and explosives in Fortnite Battle Royale

The new Fly Explosives LTM promises “cartoon chaos”

The new Fly Explosives LTM debuts today as well. Described as “complete cartoon chaos” by Epic, this mode limits players to using explosive weaponry. In addition, another vaulted item, the Jetpack, is returning for the duration of this LTM. Expect to see plenty of footage of players using the Guided Missile to chase high-flying foes as they jetpack across the map.

Though the details for this weekend’s Summer Skirmish tournament are still under wraps, it would be interesting if Epic incorporates both the Guided Missile and Jetpack. Fun additions such as these show the developer is interested in pursuing the entertainment factor of the game rather than focusing solely on the competitive aspect. This is certainly reflected in their decisions to add features such as golf and skeet shooting in Season 5.

Further tweaks to Playground LTM and new Save the World content

Furthermore, the Playground LTM is still available. Both Jetpacks and Guided Missiles are now available in this mode as well, at least for the time being. The popular mode also received a tweak to its healing items. Bandages no longer spawn, and Chug Jug and shield spawn rates are decreased. Per Epic, this is in an effort “to raise the chance of spawning healing items that get players to full health & shields.”

Lastly, Save the World players can now purchase a new weapon, the Spyglass Sniper Rifle. Part of the Flintlock Weapon set, this rifle debuts in the game’s Weekly Store on August 1, at 8 PM ET. Despite the recent sale for Save the World, this week’s minimal PvE update reinforces the feeling that Epic’s primary focus is on PvP. While this may be disappointing for new players, at least Battle Royale is seeing constant support.

Epic is unafraid to shelve weapons that don’t work, just as they’re willing to bring them back when ready. How do you feel about the return of Guided Missiles?
