Electronic Arts (EA) and FIFA today announced that the 2020 edition of the FIFA eClub World Cup will take place in Milan, Italy Feb. 7 – 9. It will be the first time the tournament will be held in the soccer-mad country with previous iterations being held in London and Paris.

Five weeks of online qualifiers have whittled down 190 teams to the world’s best 24 club sides. Each will be battling it out for a share of the $100,000 prize pool and the much sought after Global Series Points — crucial for securing qualification for the end-of-season FIFA eWorld Cup.

Some of esports’ most well-known organizations will have representatives at the competition including FaZe Clan, Mkers, and Fnatic. Joining them will be a number of soccer clubs esports arms such as Manchester City Esports, AS Roma, and FC Basel 1893 Esports.

One team that failed to make the cut was Brøndby Esport; the two-time champions failed to qualify for the first time in their history.

The game’s biggest players will also be there. Last year’s winner, Donovan “Tekkz” Hunt of Fnatic, returns, having ditched Nicolas “Nicolas99FC” Villalba in favor of Tom Leese of Hashtag United.

Also in attendance is PlayStation No.1 Diego “Crazy” Campagnani of Team QLASH who will fancy his chances in his homeland, as well as the 2017 FIFA eWorld Cup winner Spencer “Gorilla” Ealing, who recently signed to NEO.

The FIFA eClub World Cup is a unique event in the FIFA competitive calendar as teams and organizations send two representatives who play as a team, with some of the games being played in a 2v2 format, a game mode not seen at other events.

Adrian Rölli, Head of eFootball at FIFA believes this gives the tournament an edge, saying, “The introduction of team-based 2v2 matches showed a new level of excitement and competitiveness at last year’s event and will undoubtedly spark huge emotions at this year’s tournament as well.”
