Popular sports network ESPN2 has announced they will host a twelve-hour esports block on Sunday, April 5. The programming marathon will kick-off at noon with Madden NFL 20. Other tournaments being shown include the F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix, Season 8 Rocket League World Championship, and more. Additionally, the current NBA 2K tournament happening this week will also join the programming block. “ESPN Esports Day” will cover a mix of live and recorded events, filling the temporary void left by traditional sporting events.

The marathon will begin with three hours of competitive gaming. It all starts off with Madden NFL 20 Classic as competitors play for the title of Madden Classic Champion along with a $190,000 prize pool. The other two games in that block will be Madden NFL 20 Club Championship and the Madden NFL 20 Challenge.

Here’s the full list of competitions:

  • 12:00 p.m. ET – Madden NFL20 Classic
  • 1:00 p.m. ET – Madden NFL20 Club Championship
  • 2:00 p.m. ET – Madden NFL20 Challenge
  • 3:00 p.m. ET – F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix

Sports to esports

This will mark the first appearance of Rocket League on ESPN television. Additionally, ESPN2 also announced it will broadcast the Rocket League Spring Series North American Grand Finals on April 26.

The unique situation the COVID-19 pandemic has left traditional sports in gives some opportunities for esports to show itself to the world. Now that live events are no longer being held, sports fans will have to fill their time with something else. Though watching competitive gaming may not be for everyone, at least ESPN2 is giving it a chance.

The biggest block in this marathon will most likely be the NBA 2K Players tournament. This tournament features several popular basketball professionals playing for charity and a title. Then, closing out the marathon will be the EXP Apex Legends Pro-Am. This will feature famous basketball player Devin Booker, streamers, musicians, and other athletes from the NBA, UFC, and WWE. Aside from the Rocket League debut, this lineup should make for an exciting 12-hour esports binge.
