Starting today, Friday, Dec. 14 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on TBS, ELEAGUE is hosting — in partnership with Psyonix — a three-episode series of Rocket League esports. In the upcoming series, they will show highlights of the latest ELEAGUE Cup as well as behind-the-scenes interviews with the players. The ELEAGUE Cup 2018 was played earlier this December between the top eight teams of RLCS season 6 for a $150,000 prize pool. With two groups of four teams, they played a double-elimination group stage, which resulted in four semifinalists.
Setting up a storyline…
The first episode will focus on the first semifinal between NA’s NRG and EU’s We Dem Girlz. Continuing on Dec. 21, the second episode moves on to the second semi-final between EU’s Dignitas and NA’s Cloud9. Finally, on Dec. 28, the focus will shift once more, logically to the Grand Final. If you don’t mind already knowing who won in the end, you can catch up with our previous article.
While the preview already hinted at setting up a storyline for We Dem Girlz as underdogs, they are underselling the team, really. Team captain Remco “Remkoe” den Boer had been absent at the absolute top for a few seasons, but he is a former RLCS World Champion. On top of that, WDG finished second in the latest RLCS EU Regionals and third at the World Finals. For a team that has had an excellent season, they should be considered a top team and a favorite to win tournaments such as ELEAGUE. Of course, when teams such as current world champions Cloud9 are competing — who made quick work of the team who are considered the best of all time three times in a row — it’s easy to understand why C9 is considered the absolute favorite.
No team in the final four can be considered an underdog, truth be told. Three out of the four semifinalists ended in the top three of RLCS season 6, with only NRG having had a poor World Finals weekend by losing their first two series and finishing in seventh-eighth place. But then, NRG did win the North American Regionals.

It isn’t the first time ELEAGUE is hosting an extra show after their cup. Last year they did it as well, and just this week they hosted a Rocket League esports 101 episode.
