Fortnite‘s grip on the gaming world almost seems absolute. We’ve recently learned that the game is helping boost developer Epic Games’ growth to $8.5 billion. The success of the battle royale genre has inspired more companies to add the same feature in age-old franchises. Activision’s Call of Duty Black Ops IIII and EA’s Battlefield V will have their own battle royale modes. Another EA franchise that wants to join in on Fortnite‘s success is FIFA. There are talks of the game adding Fortnite‘s dances and emotes.

But what about an entirely new offering from EA? Well, it looks like they’re considering just that: a free-to-play battle royale game in the vein of Fortnite.

A possible standalone free-to-play battle royale game

According to GamesIndustry.biz, EA’s Vice President of Investor Relations, Chris Evenden, answered questions about any planned moves in relation to Fortnite. First on the list was cross-platform marketability for EA’s titles. The company wants to replicate the success of Epic Games when it launched Fortnite for multiple systems. Being able to play the game on the same account on different devices “can bring friends and family together,” according to Evenden.

COO and CFO Blake Jorgensen also chimed in for yet another Fortnite-related question. When asked about Battlefield V‘s battle royale, Jorgensen said that it would definitely be unlike anything else. However, he also noted that EA is “interested in experimenting with a free-to-play standalone game,” which perked up listeners. Jorgensen cited that it could be part of the shooter genre or something else entirely.

There were other possible hints of EA studying Fortnite‘s success in the hopes of coming up with a contender for the battle royale throne. The comparisons between both games, alongside the fact that EA is one of the largest video game corporations around, led to speculation that they might be planning something big on the horizon. As usual, Daily Esports will keep you updated on any developments.
