On Friday, Oct. 22, Counter Logic Gaming fired their GM Daniel “Tafo” Lee. On the following Tuesday, the team announced that they will be bringing on Jonathon McDaniel as the new League of Legends Championship Series General Manager. McDaniel was most recently the assistant general manager for fellow LCS organization Golden Guardians.
During McDaniel’s two years with the Golden Guardians, the team famously upset TSM in the 2020 summer playoffs. The Golden Guardians’ core roster, which came very close to Worlds 2020, was transferred over to 100 Thieves in the offseason ahead of the 2021 season. That core went on to win the LCS championship in 2021.

Greg Kim, the head of CLG, stated that he is very excited to have McDaniel on board.
“Jonathon has had a great career in the League of Legends space, from scouting to coaching, and ultimately leading to jobs in the front office,” Greg Kim, head of CLG, said. “I’ve always admired his work and I’m excited to have him take this next step of leading CLG’s League of Legends program back to the ultimate goal of competing for championships.”
CLG have been at the bottom of the LCS standings for the past two years. The once legendary organization has been in League of Legends esports since the beginning. CLG is also trying to capture the magic they had from their last championship win in 2016.
Along with being the assistant GM for Golden Guardians, McDaniel assisted Cloud9 in various ways, including team management, coaching and analysis. Also, McDaniel has closely worked with Riot Games on several issues, including the playoff format changes and lock-in tournaments for the LCS. McDaniel shared that he is looking forward to bringing his skill set to an organization in desperate need of a revival.
“When I started as a fan of League of Legends in 2011, there were many legacy organizations that I was able to watch grow from humble beginnings, with CLG being one of those marquee franchises,” McDaniel said. “All these years later, I’m honored to join CLG and my goal is to build a League of Legends program that our fans can look forward to growing year over year and make them proud.”
CLG’s offseason is off to an active start and will probably look to make roster changes as well.
