Whoever is running social media for the upcoming Chengdu Overwatch League team may be in big trouble. This morning, the Chengdu Hunters would reveal their name and branding on their Twitter account. However, this might have been a mistake. Currently, the Chengdu Hunters Twitter page is empty, but before, the page had a Twitter header, profile picture, and a tweet. Additionally, to add some credibility to the account, the official Twitter of the Boston Uprising is following them.

At around 6AM EST, the now-blank slate Twitter account had posted, saying, “Hi! We are the Chengdu Hunters! Our logo is the panda, a national treasure of China, the symbol of Chengdu, and a symbol of peace and good luck. We represent the Chinese spirit of perseverance, and determination to achieve victory. Now let’s go hunting!” At the time, the team also included an image, that would reveal that the team is operated by Chinese esports powerhouse, Royal Never Give Up. It has since all been removed, pointing to the possibility that this was all leaked a bit too soon.

An RNG-operated team?

Many fans are now hopeful for the Chengdu Hunters, after seeing that RNG is part of the management. RNG is one of the most success esports organizations in the world, especially in the League of Legends scene where we named their ADC Jian “Uzi” Zi-Hao one of the best ADCs in the world. Many people know the importance of a good In the Chinese LPL, RNG would win both the 2018 Spring and Summer Splits. They would also win the Mid-Season Invitational, which is an international tournament between the two seasons.

RNG would also help China win Rift Rivals, which is another international grudge match between regional rivals. In this case, they would take down both Taiwanese/Hong Kong teams, as well as every Korean team. Although RNG wouldn’t win the World Championship, they would help carve a path for fellow Chinese team, Invictus Gaming to take the crown at Worlds 2018. In an esport where South Korea has dominated for so long, it was a record-setting year for the region and for RNG.

Possible Lineups?

There have been multiple rumors and leaks about the roster of the team. One such rumor surrounds Ted “silkthread” Wang, who would last play for the Los Angeles Gladiators. A leak would link him to the team a month ago, and now those rumors may have some merit to them.

It looks like Silkthread is heading to China today, for reasons unknown to his fans. Could he be meeting up with the Chengdu Hunters for a live reveal? Or could Silkthread be joining another Chinese-based team? We already know of the Guangzhou Charge, but what about the unnamed Hangzhou team? There are still multiple possibilities for where he could end up, but the timing is very coincidental.

Community Reactions

The Overwatch community seems to have had a pretty positive reaction to the reveal. Many users would praise the usage of the panda as a logo, as well as the style of font. Additionally, the color scheme that the team would showcase would be welcomed as well. The only problem that some fans would point out is the contradiction between the name, Hunters, and the logo, a panda. Still, the branding of the team is some of the best we’ve seen so far.

It remains to be seen what’s going on with the team though. Everything points to this being a leak. Whether it was too early or some messaging remained unfinalized, there’s nothing official on the Chengdu Hunter’s media right now. Leak or not, we hope to have some more information on the team soon.
