Earlier this week, developer CD Projekt Red confirmed that a new Witcher title is currently in development. In addition to a short blog post, the official Witcher Twitter account tweeted out a promotional teaser image. That image had a small phrase attached to it, saying “A new saga begins.” The image itself caused some confusion among fans, as it shows a Witcher medallion in the snow. While there was some debate as to what animal the medallion portrayed, CDPR put the questions to rest by saying it resembles a lynx.
Fans of the Witcher franchise were obviously thrilled to hear one of the most successful fantasy franchises in the world is developing another chapter in its video game series. However, the promotional image raised more questions. Though fans now know the medallion portrayed is a lynx, there’s debate over what that could mean for the new game.
What the Witcher Lynx medallion could mean
CDPR confirmed the lynx identity of the medallion when speaking about the game to Eurogamer. The global communication director for CDPR, Robin Malinowski, simply said “some mysteries should not be so mysterious.”
While this is great news for fans wondering what the medallion resembled, fans now have more questions. Originally, some fans thought that the medallion was hinting at which Witcher school could be at the center of the new game. Each Witcher was trained at a different school, with the main character of the previous games, Geralt, hailing from the School of the Wolf.
The most popular guess for the teaser was the School of the Cat, since the medallion is shaped like a feline. This turned out to be both correct and incorrect. The lynx is, of course, a type of big cat but there’s no indication CDPR is hinting at the School of the Cat with this medallion.
They could be teasing an entirely new school, presumably named the School of the Lynx. There also remains the possibility that the medallion doesn’t relate to any Witcher schools at all and is signaling another direction for the new game. The School of the Lynx is a popular fan-fiction that the developers could be taking inspiration from. In it, Vesemir and Kiera Metz form the school after the events of the Witcher 3, reforming the School of the Cat.
All in all, we aren’t entirely sure what the lynx medallion means for the newest Witcher title. The only aspect of the game that CDPR has confirmed is that it won’t be called “The Witcher 4.” This lines up with the “new saga” phrase found underneath the lynx medallion in the teaser.
It’s unclear when new details about the game will emerge from CDPR, so fans will have to keep waiting and speculating.
