Nearly 10 years after its original launch on the Wii U, Mario Kart 8 is still going strong with several Mario Kart 8 Deluxe unlockables. The Nintendo Switch’s Deluxe version is receiving steady waves of downloadable content and it holds the distinction of being the best-selling game on both the Wii U and the Switch.

Most of the unlockables from the original game became available from the start when the Deluxe version launched, including every racetrack. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of hidden goodies that players can obtain by collecting coins on the various tracks, among other methods.

Here’s an overview of all of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe unlockables.

Characters

There is only one true unlockable character in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Gold Mario. To unlock Gold Mario, players must complete every single cup in the 200cc Grand Prix. Afterward, Gold Mario will become the default variation of Metal Mario on the character select screen.

Beyond this, the only other characters that aren’t in the base roster are those that must be purchased as DLC. Currently, Birdo is the only DLC character available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, Nintendo has confirmed that more DLC characters are on the way.

Vehicle parts

Upon first loading up the game, players will have access to five karts, two standard bikes, one sports bike, two ATVs, six tires and four gliders. The rest of the vehicle parts in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are unlockables.

Players cannot choose the order in which they unlock new parts. Instead, they will randomly unlock a new part after obtaining a certain number of in-game coins. For the first 450 coins, they will get a new part every 30 coins. Then, they will unlock a new part every 50 coins up to 1,500 coins. Finally, new parts will become available every 100 coins until the player reaches 3,100 coins, at which point they will have unlocked every standard car customization.

To unlock the Gold Standard kart, players must earn a one-star ranking in every Mirror Cup available in the base game. Meanwhile, they can get Gold Tires by beating all 48 staff ghosts in the base game in 150cc Time Trials. Finally, players can unlock the Gold Glider by collecting 5,000 coins.
