Ever since the very first Pokémon title that was released back in the late 1990’s, the grass-type Pokémon have been mainstays in many players’ collections and teams that they use in battle. And that is no different in the newest generation of Pokémon games with the release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for the Nintendo Switch.
Just like in every previous mainline game, picking a starter Pokémon is the first step on any trainer’s journey and out of the three possible selections, one is always going to be a grass-type. But are grass-type Pokémon strong and what are they weak against?
Here is a breakdown of all grass-type weaknesses in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Fire
This is the natural counter to grass in the real world and in the Pokémon series. Fire-type moves are super effective against grass-type Pokémon and have been from the very beginning of the series.
It’s important to note that a Pokémon doesn’t have to be a fire-type to be able to learn fire-type moves. But normally, trainers will need to watch out for fire-type Pokémon and the most common one players will run into is the fire-type starter which in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is Fuecoco.
Bug
A natural predator to grass in real life and in the game, bug-type moves are also super effective against grass-type Pokémon. One of the strong bug-type Pokémon players will run into in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is Lokix, which actually can be found very early on in the game.
Flying
Flying-type Pokémon are also super effective against grass-type Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. There are a few flying-type Pokémon to be wary of in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, with newcomers like Bombardier and Kilowatteral. But there are also Pokémon like Talonflame, Braviary, and Staraptor to watch out for too. Flying Pokémon are luckily easy to avoid since they are in the air instead of hidden in the grass.
Poison
Poison is the fourth different type that’s be super effective against grass-type Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. There aren’t a ton of notable poison-type Pokémon early on in the game but the good ones show up in the mid to late game. Be wary of Toxtricity, Clodsire, and Grafaifai.
Ice
And finally, there is the ice-type. This is the only type that doesn’t completely shut down grass-type Pokémon. That’s because, unlike the four other types, ice-type moves are super effective against grass-type Pokémon but grass-type moves still do normal damage to it. The other four types only take half damage from grass-type moves which makes ice-type moves good against grass-type Pokémon but not necessarily ice-type Pokémon. So instead of being scared of ice-type Pokémon, players should look out for ice-type moves like Ice Fang and Ice Beam.
