Afreeca Freecs are acquiring some firepower for their mid lane position. The team is picking up former KT Rolster mid laner, Son “Ucal” Woo-hyeon.

The team would announce their newest offseason addition through their social media. They would express their excitement for Ucal, saying that they are looking forward to the 2019 year. He joins Kim “Kiin” Gi-in as the only true starters on the team, next to jungler, Lee “Mowgli” Jae-ha. However, many Afreeca Freecs fans are hopeful for the upcoming competitive year, and what it may bring to the table.
Ucal and Unprecedented Potential
Ucal would make his LCK debut in March 2018, and would quickly become one of the best mid laners in the region. Standing toe to toe with the likes of Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok and Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong, he would earn the title of “Super Rookie” amongst his fans. For many people, if there was one player that KT Rolster should have fought to keep, it would be Ucal. He is only 17 years old and is already exhibiting the traits of a superstar.
However, by joining Afreeca Freecs, he now forms a deadly core duo with Kiin. With both of their incredible mechanics and macro skills, there could be another superteam forming over in Korea. Kiin is also very young, only two years older than Ucal, so the potential for the two phenoms is extremely high. Unfortunately, the bigger problem for Afreeca Freecs is building a team around these two powerful laners.
An Empty Bottom Side
This past offseason, Afreeca Freecs would lose their bottom lane duo, as well as their midlaner. They now need to address their openings at those positions, as well as their lack of a starting jungler. Although Mowgli could be a starting jungler for the team, he did share time with Lee “Spirit” Da-yoon. Ha “Kramer” Jong-hun and Park “TusiN” Jong-ik were also a very underrated bottom lane duo throughout 2018 and is a significant loss for the former Korean second seed.
The only thing Afreeca Freecs can count on is the plentiful amount of free agents still available on the market. The LCK has gone through a huge roster shuffle, and many players are moving to different teams. Some Korean players are even moving to other regions, as seen from the NA LCS. They have to act quickly, or else all the top-tier ADC and support players may get swept up by other organizations. If they aren’t able to get Ucal and Kiin the support they need, they may be in for a long season next year.
